theladysnarkydame: Rain falling from green leaves (Rain)
[personal profile] theladysnarkydame
I've cried a lot this morning, for a man I never met, for his friends and his family.   It's a very strange thing, how hollow the loss of someone like that can make you feel.

I haven't read his books.  At first, he seemed too much of a kitchen dudebro -- the stories too much revelry in terrible behavior.  But he grew, and he learned, and he opened doors to people and places I never knew.  No Reservations and Parts Unknown are remarkable, beautiful work.  He showed me other cultures, other histories, with a matter of fact respect and genuine kindness that are striking and rare.

He made the world bigger, and more warm, and I am so sorry he is gone.
